Built in 1885 in the fashionable spa town of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia by Colonel Samuel Taylor Suit, the Berkeley Castle was never seen completed by the master of the house. After his death in 1888, his young bride Rosa took up residence and quickly became the talk of the town - holding lavish and extravagant parties and a steady pace. Rosa quickly found herself in debt and Berkeley Castle has gone through several hands since her eviction in the 1920s.
Despite her eviction and eventual move out West towards the end of her life, Rosa Suit's restless spirit is said to roam the castle and occasionally engage in mischief. Reports of non-functional laptops and automobiles have been heard on several occassions, as well as strange images captured by cameras and seen in mirrors.
You'll find some great West Virginia haunted lodging options throughout the state.
